The ’23-’24 Season finds German-American tenor Rafael Helbig-Kostka a new home base at the Nationaltheater Mannheim, where he has the pleasure of singing making his professional debuts of Ferrando, Alfred, Scaramuccio, and Don Ottavio under the baton of 1st Kapellmeister Jānis Liepiņš, as well as Pong and the Narr/Leibbojar from Boris Godunov under the new GMD Roberto Rizzi Brignoli.

’22-’23 marks Rafael’s final season at the Staatstheater Meiningen, where he successfully made his role debut in a number of roles, the biggest of which as Conte Almaviva in Rossini’s ‘Il barbiere di siviglia,’ He was described by Concerti for his performance as Almaviva as a “subtle bundle of energy” with a “…bright Tenor voice with reserves of virile vocal heft…”, and possessing “..an ease of coloratura as well as sureness of style…” by the Deutschland Funk. He also made debuts in a staged version of Haendel’s The Messiah as the tenor soloist, Victorin in Die Tote Stadt, as well as the 4th Jew in Strauss’s Salome.

The ’21-’22 Season begins for Helbig-Kostka with the honor of being named Austria’s Best Male Young Singer 2021 for his performance as Male Chorus in Benjamin Britten’s “The Rape of Lucretia” from the Oesterreicher Musiktheaterpreis Organization, with other winners that evening including Elsa Dreisig, Piotr Beczała, and special prizes for life’s work for Heinz Zednik and the Media Prize for Jonas Kaufmann.

The rest of the season included several role and professional debuts, the greatest being his debut as Tamino in a production of Achim Freyer’s Die Zauberföte, where he was generously described amongst other publications by o-ton.online as performing Tamino with “a very lyrical expression and with tenorial Schmelz. His ‘Bildnis’ aria was lead with a slender voice and with secure high register.” Other debuts of the season include the Steuermann and Caramello in “Eine Nacht in Venedig.”

Rafael was also a New England Region finalist of the Metropolitan Opera Council Auditions, as well as a finalist of the Palm Springs Opera Competition. He took 3rd Prize at the Anton Bruckner University Operetta Competition in 2019.

Rafael began his studies as a boy soprano with the age of 12, and began his university studies in voice at Shasta College and graduating cum laude from California State University Stanislaus. Afterwards he received his Master’s degree from the New England Conservatory, and officially began his career in Europe after joining the opera studio of the State Theater Linz, in Austria.

Rafael Helbig-Kostka wurde in Deutschland geboren und ist in Nord Kalifornien aufgewachsen wo er als Knabensopran Gesangsunterricht nahm.

In der ersten Spielzeithälfte 2019/2020 mit dem Musiktheater Linz, wird Rafael-Helbig-Kostka in seiner Rolle as "Male Chorus", in " The Rape of Lucretia" von Benjamin Britten singen. Nach den Aufführungen von Lucretia wird Rafael Helbig-Kostka sein Hauptbühnen Debut als Pedrillo in "Die Entführung aus dem Serail", am Landestheater Linz geben, und wird in der Serie "Oper am Klavier," die Rolle des Sardanapalo von Liszts "verlorener Oper" "Sardanapalo", singen. In der zweiten Spielzeithälfte, wird er Paolino in Cimarosas "Il Matrimonio Segreto" aufführen, und als der Erste Schäfer in der Uraufführung der Oper "Unter dem Gletscher" von Michael Obst, auf der Hauptbühne am Landestheater Linz zu hören sein.

Rafael Helbig-Kostka trat in der Spielzeit 2018/2019 als Mitglied des Ober-Österreichischen Opernstudios Linz, wo er in seiner ersten Oper der Spielzeit die Hauptrolle als Simon in der deutschsprachigen Premiere von Gerhard Stäblers Simon sang.  In der Oper "The Transposed Heads" von Peggy Glanville-Hicks, sang Rafael Helbig-Kostka in der Hauptrolle als der Brahmane Schridaman. Seine Stimme wurde vom Onlinemerker.com als "schön timbrierte, helle, sauber geführte, bewegliche Stimme" beschrieben, die "ohne hörbare Anstrengung auch in den Höhen beachtlichen Druck erzeugte". In seiner letzen Oper der 2018/2019 Saison , "Die Polnische Hochzeit" von Joseph Beer, "brilliert" (OÖNachrichten) der Helbig-Kostka in der Hauptrolle Graf Boleslav mit seinem "herrlichen und strahlenden, lyrischen Tenor mit Schmelz aber ohne Schmalz" (Onlinemerker).

Kürzlich hat er den Dritten Preis in dem 2019 Anton Bruckner Universität Operettenwettbewerb gewonnen. Er war Finalist in der 2018 Palm Springs Opera Guild Vocal Competition – auch war er Finalist in der New England Region for the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.

In 2016 und 2017 war er als Gerdine Young Artist mit dem Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. Er war als Unterbesetzung in den Rollen des Tito in Mozart’s “La Clemenza di Tito” und Berthold/Flogger/Titorelli’s in der nordamerikanischen Uraufführung der Phillip Glass Oper “The Trial”. Zuvor war er als “Featured Artist” an der Opera Theater Pittsburgh Summerfest wo er die Rolle des italienischen Tenors in der Strauss Oper “Capriccio” besetzt hat.  Auch hat er die Rolle des Basilio in der Oper “Die Hochzeit des Figaro” dort besetzt.

Er ist Alumnus der New England Conservatory Boston (NEC), wo er seinen Masterabschluss in Gesang und das Diplom in Gesangspädagogik erreicht hat. Während seiner Zeit bei NEC hat her folgende Rollen gesungen: Rektor in Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen; Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi; Pylade in Iphigenie en Tauride; Ferrando in Cosi Fan Tutte; und Tamino in Die Zauberflöte. Er hat seinen Bachelor in Musik an der California State University Stanislaus abgeschlossen.
